The European Central Bank (ECB) will decide in the summer whether to start an experiment with the digital euro, but this won’t mean the introduction of such a currency in the near future, Head of the ECB Christine Lagarde said during her speech at an online conference, Report informs referring to Prime agency.
“We are studying all the options and all the risks associated with them. In the summer we will decide whether we will introduce an experiment,” she said.
At the same time, the experiment with the digital euro will not mean the introduction of this currency into circulation in the near future, she noted.
In early February, it was reported that the European Commission and the European Central Bank are studying the technical and legal issues of creating a digital euro. The ECB has said it is considering issuing such a currency to prepare for the digital age. The EC noted that the digital euro can support the digitalization of the entire economy of the European Union, which the European Commission itself considers one of the most important elements of the EU’s development.
Lagarde said in late March that the regulator could launch the digital euro around the middle of this decade.
