EBRD appoints first woman chief economist

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has a new Chief Economist.

By Report's information, the bank's new Chief Economist Beata Javorcik assumed the office on September 1, replacing Sergey Guriyev in this position.

The first woman in the position of the Bank's Chief Economist holds a Statutory Professorship in Economics from the University of Oxford and Ph.D. in Economics from Yale.

“I am very excited to take up this fascinating position at the EBRD. It will provide me with the unique opportunity to participate in the work of this important institution," adds Beata.

"My research explores how transition economies and developing countries can harness globalisation to stimulate economic growth. As EBRD Chief Economist I look forward to making a concrete contribution for the benefit of the Bank’s countries of operations," she said.

Notably, Javorcik previously worked at WB's Washington office. Though the decision to appoint her as chief economist was approved on February 25, 2019, it came effective on September 1.

Meanwhile, Guriyev whom Beata replaced in this position, has been EBRD's chief economist since 2006 and after that she will return to the Sciences Po in Paris as the professor in economics.
