Work underway to increase transmission capacity of SCP

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) is increasing the transmission capacity of the South Caucasus Pipeline (SCP) to boost the volume of Azerbaijani gas transported to Europe, a source familiar with the matter told Report.

The source clarified that while the design capacity of the SCP is 71 million cubic meters of gas per day, the current actual throughput is approximately 67-68 million cubic meters, which is equivalent to approximately 24.8 billion cubic meters per year.

“The transmission capacity of SCP is getting closer to the design capacity year by year. We have been increasing the volume of gas that can be transported by SCP for the past three years without significant capital investments,” the source said.

After expansion, the transmission capacity of the SCP pipeline will increase by approximately 4 million cubic meters per day, which means about 1.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year: “This will allow us to export 16 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe in 2027. A large amount of investment is not planned for these purposes, but some modernization of the compressor units will be needed. The equipment has already been ordered,” the source added.
