Umud Shokri: Azerbaijan strengthens its position in Middle East through gas supplies to Syria

Azerbaijan has taken a strategic step by starting natural gas deliveries to Syria, a move that could reshape the balance of power in the region and bolster the country’s influence in the Middle East, Dr. Umud Shokri, Energy Strategist and Senior Visiting Fellow at the US George Mason University, said in his article for Attaqa, according to Report.

“Gas supplies from Azerbaijan to Syria are part of a carefully calibrated regional strategy that combines geopolitical influence with economic interests. Azerbaijan is extending its energy diplomacy beyond Europe and the Caspian region, entering the Middle Eastern market through Türkiye,” he noted.

According to the expert, the project allows Baku to establish contact with the new Syrian government while simultaneously strengthening ties with Ankara. Moreover, the use of key energy infrastructure turns Azerbaijan into a ‘soft power’ player, influencing regional dynamics without resorting to military force.

“Participation in the country’s reconstruction strengthens Azerbaijan’s image as a positive regional actor, especially in the most affected northern regions. Baku and its allies are expanding their influence by supporting the new government and contributing to Syria’s recovery,” the expert emphasized.

He pointed out that the tripartite partnership with financial backing from Qatar is forming a growing alliance capable of reshaping regional trends and supporting Syria’s reconstruction process.

“The project contributes to regional stability by improving prospects for diplomatic settlement and reducing violence, while simultaneously aiding the recovery of Syria’s economy and energy sector. Through trade and infrastructure, this energy cooperation could become the foundation for building peace in the Middle East and serve as a model for similar initiatives,” the expert believes.

“In general, the project opens a new phase of regional integration, where energy diplomacy plays a decisive role in resolving conflicts, strengthening political influence, and rebuilding the economy,” Shokri added.
