Moldova open to long-term gas supply deal with Azerbaijan

Moldova is open to exploring the prospects of signing a long-term gas supply agreement with Azerbaijan, Moldovan Energy Minister Dorin Jungietu told Report.

The minister noted that the supply of Azerbaijani gas to Ukraine via the Trans-Balkan route creates an opportunity for Moldova to access this resource as well.

"In this context, the Republic of Moldova may directly import gas from Azerbaijan in the future. Chisinau is open to considering the prospects of signing a long-term agreement with Azerbaijan in this direction," the minister stated.

He added that signing such an agreement would only be the first step: "The next phase involves negotiations between commercial entities — such as Energocom, which operates on the Moldovan market, or other licensed companies interested in purchasing Azerbaijani gas."

Jungiyetu emphasized that Moldova supports the liberalization of its domestic gas market, a process that began last year.

"Until this process is complete, ensuring supply security and protecting consumers remain top priorities. In the long term, the goal is for every consumer to freely choose their supplier, and we aim to attract new, reliable players to the market. Azerbaijan has already proven itself to be a trustworthy energy partner," the minister concluded.
