The share of Russian energy carriers in the EU market has decreased to 20%, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said in an interview with DW, Report informs.
“If before the start of the war the share of Russian energy carriers in the EU was 40%, now it has dropped to 20%,” he said.
According to Borrell, it is impossible “to demand from the European economy to stop buying gas overnight”, “we cannot work miracles.”
Asked why Brussels did not impose punitive tariffs on Russian gas to cut the flow of funds into Moscow’s military treasury, Borrell said the proposal was seriously considered but rejected. Instead, it was decided to stop buying Russian oil from the end of the year.
“Now we are in the process of stopping gas purchases,” he noted.
