An official opening ceremony of the Türkiye-Syria natural gas pipeline, which will ensure the transportation of Azerbaijani gas to Syria through Turkish territory, was held today in Yavuzlu village of Türkiye's Kilis province.
According to Report, Azerbaijan's Minister of Economy Mikayil Jabbarov, Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar, Qatar Development Fund head Fahad Hamad Hassan Al-Sulaiti, and Syria's Minister of Energy Mohammed Al-Bashir participated in the event.
After the ministers' speeches, officials symbolically turned the valve of a pipeline installed on stage, officially launching the export of Azerbaijani gas to Syria via Türkiye.
According to a document recently signed between the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) and the Syrian government, all technical preparations for the transportation of natural gas have been completed. In the first phase of the project, the export of 1.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Syria annually is planned. The gas will be delivered to power plants in Aleppo and Homs via Türkiye's Kilis province and will be used for electricity generation. As a result, it is expected to achieve an electricity production capacity of 1,200-1,300 megawatts.
The commissioning of the new energy line is considered an important step in terms of restoring Syria's energy infrastructure. Thus, natural gas from Azerbaijan aims to contribute significantly to the restoration of Syria's damaged electricity infrastructure, as well as to Türkiye's goal of becoming a regional energy hub.
On July 12, 2025, within the framework of the working visit of Syria's transitional President Ahmed Al Sharaa to Azerbaijan, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between SOCAR and the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic. The document was signed by Mikayil Jabbarov, Chairman of SOCAR's Supervisory Board, and Mohammed Al-Bashir, Syria's Minister of Energy.
