Azerbaijan mulls blue hydrogen collaboration with Germany's Uniper

Azerbaijan has discussed cooperation opportunities and joint project implementation with Germany's Uniper company in expanding blue hydrogen technologies, the Ministry of Energy told Report.

During a meeting held at the Ministry of Energy with the participation of Deputy Energy Minister Elnur Soltanov, the sides expressed satisfaction with the existing cooperation ties. The parties discussed collaboration and prospective opportunities in gas supply, energy security, diversification of supply, energy efficiency, energy transition, and renewable energy.

The Azerbaijani side provided information about the country's plans for establishing green energy zones, green energy potential, production, and export, about the country's targets and initiatives in the field of green energy within the framework of the COP29 event to be held in Baku this year.

The discussion also focused on the development of green hydrogen production and export, cooperation opportunities and the implementation of joint projects in the production and storage of green hydrogen, as well as the expansion of blue hydrogen technologies. The sides emphasized the importance of exchanging experience in this field.

Blue hydrogen, derived from natural gas with carbon capture and storage, is seen as a transitional fuel in the shift towards a low-carbon economy. Azerbaijan, with its vast gas reserves, is well-positioned to become a significant player in the emerging hydrogen market.

The meeting also involved an exchange of views on other issues of mutual interest stemming from the cooperation.
