An event dedicated to the European Day of Languages was held at the Azerbaijan University of Languages, Report informs.
It was attended by Rector of the University Kamal Abdulla, Head of the European Union Delegation to Azerbaijan Peter Michalko and a number of ambassadors of the EU member states.
“It is gratifying that we are celebrating this day in Azerbaijan, as our country has historically been a bridge between East and West. Azerbaijan is a country with multicultural values, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has repeatedly noted this,” University Rector Kamal Abdulla said.
The head of the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan, Peter Michalko, in turn, noted that the study of new foreign languages helps to better understand the culture of the countries where they are spoken.
“Despite that several languages are usually spoken in the EU, its inhabitants are still trying to learn new ones. Undoubtedly, through languages and literature we learn about the culture of other countries, and also build communication. No matter what language you speak, the most important is the message of humanism and peace, which is what this date is aimed at,” Michalko said.
The European Day of Languages is celebrated annually on September 26 with the aim of supporting linguistic diversity, the bilingualism of every European, the development of the teaching and learning of various languages in the world. It was proclaimed by the Council of Europe with the support of the EU during the European Year of Languages in 2001.
