Volume of waste released into atmosphere in Azerbaijan rises

In the previous year, Azerbaijan experienced a 34,500-ton increase in atmospheric pollutants from stationary sources and vehicles compared to 2022, Report informs with the reference to State Statistics Committee of Azerbaijan.

The aggregate pollutant volume amounted to 965,100 tons, with vehicular emissions accounting for 85% or 820,800 tons. Notably, emissions from vehicles rose by 6.3%, whereas emissions from stationary sources saw an 8.9% reduction.

Furthermore, Baku’s industrial centers witnessed a 21,100-ton decrease in stationary source emissions, Sumgayit saw a 900-ton reduction, and Mingachevir had a 200-ton increase.

In 2023, treatment facilities successfully captured and neutralized 67.3% of harmful substances from stationary sources. Enhanced technological processes and more efficient purification systems led to 85,200 tons of pollutants being released into the air.

The composition of harmful waste released from all sources was predominantly carbon oxide at 61.5%, followed by hydrocarbons at 21.3%, nitrogen oxide at 13.4%, sulfur anhydride at 0.1%, with other pollutants comprising the remainder.
