In a collaboration between the Embassy of Malaysia in Baku and the Azerbaijani Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry, a “Sustainable Development Through Geoparks” Program was organized on September 30, 2023, at Aghdam mud volcano, Gobustan District of Azerbaijan with the participation of the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) Alumni Club Azerbaijan, Report informs.

The program was aimed at increasing awareness and promoting sustainable development through ecotourism and geo-conservation. It was also part of a public diplomacy and outreach program to encourage greater people-to-people connectivity, in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

Chargés d'affaires a.i. of the Embassy shared some facts about Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark, which gained the status of the first UNESCO Global Geopark in Southeast Asia in 2007 that is managed according to a global concept of protection, education and sustainable development.

The MTCP which was established in 1980 reflected Malaysia’s commitment to the South-South Corporation through the sharing of Malaysia’s development experiences and expertise with other developing countries. To date, there are around 230 MTCP Alumni from Azerbaijan and it is hoped that this MTCP Club will continue to prosper and contribute to the growth, development, and progress of the bilateral relations between Malaysia and Azerbaijan.
