Steps must be taken to transform the recommendations given to Armenia by international organizations into enforceable requirements, Sabit Baghirov, co-founder of the Environmental Protection First (EPF) Coalition, said during the presentation of a digital map of Armenia's mineral resources, Report informs.
According to Baghirov, all 10 rivers that flow from Armenia into Azerbaijan are at risk:
“Armenia's mining industry severely contaminates these rivers. There are 15 special waste plants in Armenia, most of which were established during the Soviet era. The waste storage facilities at these plants are in extremely hazardous condition. Armenian media have also reported this with supporting evidence. Therefore, we recognize the danger and must take decisive action to address this environmental issue. We must turn the recommendations given to Armenia by international organizations into requirements," he highlighted.
Baghirov also suggested that the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) should strengthen its criteria for the application of environmental norms within its Standard.
"If this happens, Armenia, as a member of the EITI, will become more transparent and responsible in this area. The Secretariat of the UN Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes should also take a definitive stance on this issue. We are ready to meet them as well. Because Armenia is avoiding joining this Convention," the official stated.
