IOM Deputy Director General: 3.6 million people worldwide live in climate-sensitive areas

3.6 million people globally reside in regions vulnerable to climate change, Ugochi Daniels, the Deputy Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), said, Report informs.

Speaking at the fifth panel session of the XI Global Baku Forum, Daniels stressed that these populations predominantly belong to underdeveloped and island nations. She added that they face financial challenges due to a lack of income, leading to debt and mass migration. These communities were also severely impacted during the coronavirus pandemic.

Furthermore, Daniels proposed that migration concerns should be a primary focus at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change’s Conference of the Parties (COP) session. She advocated for the establishment of a contingency fund to address these issues, which would enhance accessibility. Daniels urged both the private and public sectors to support this initiative.
