Azerbaijan may introduce criminal responsibility for ecocide

The Azerbaijani Milli Majlis (Parliament) is considering the addition of the concept of ecocide to the country's Criminal Code, MP Nizami Safarov said at today’s meeting of Milli Majlis’s Committee for Law Policy and State-Building, Report informs.

Safarov informed the members of the committee about the issue included in the agenda - the bill "On Amendments to the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan".

The bill introduced by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev proposes to incorporate the concept of ecocide and ensure that those responsible for this crime are held accountable under the law.

The MP stated that the change aims to ensure the proper legal assessment of environmental crimes committed in the country and the improvement of the legal framework for sustainable protection of the ecosystem.
