Azerbaijan faces surge in mudflows: Over 100 incidents in three months

Nazim Mahmudov, the head of Azerbaijan's National Hydrometeorological Service, said the country has witnessed an alarming 102 incidents of mudflows in May, June, and July of this year.

According to Report, this figure marks a significant increase from the 87 mudflows recorded during the same period in 2023.

Mahmudov emphasized that this year has seen the highest number of mudflows in Azerbaijan over the past 50 years.

He attributed this disturbing trend to the global climate change, which has led to a growing frequency of anomalous natural phenomena not only in Azerbaijan but worldwide.

"In recent years, we have increasingly observed above-normal air temperatures, as well as an increase in precipitation, floods, and inundations," Mahmudov stated.

The head of the hydrometeorological service also pointed out that Azerbaijan is currently experiencing weather patterns uncharacteristic of July. Several districts of the country have been hit by heavy downpours, resulting in mudflows along the rivers. Over the past two days, the water level in Ganjachay has risen to its highest point in recent years.
