Twenty Azerbaijani citizens repatriated from Syria

On May 27, twenty citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan, including six women and 14 children held in the Amerna camp in the Syrian city of Jerabus, were repatriated.

Report informs, citing the Foreign Ministry, that they were brought back home owing to the step-by-step measures taken by the Azerbaijani government.

Thus, first of all, the location of women and minors to be repatriated was determined, their identities and citizenship of the Republic of Azerbaijan were clarified. Afterward, representatives of relevant government agencies included in the working group responsible for the repatriation of Azerbaijani citizens from Iraq and Syria were sent to the Republic of Turkey.

As a result of joint activities with the relevant government agencies of the Republic of Turkey, the above-mentioned citizens crossed the border of Syria with Turkey on May 25 this year.

The delegation sent to the Republic of Turkey conducted an initial medical and psychological examination of women and children on May 26, 2021, and provided them with the necessary assistance. After that, the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Republic of Turkey issued "Return Certificates to the Republic of Azerbaijan" to our citizens and provided them with air tickets to Azerbaijan.

On May 27 this year, accompanied by officials of the Migration Service of the Republic of Turkey and the delegation of the Republic of Azerbaijan, these citizens were repatriated to the Republic of Azerbaijan on a flight from Istanbul to Baku.

The Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan intends to take all necessary measures for the reintegration and rehabilitation of relevant persons.

The assistance provided by the Republic of Turkey in the implementation of this process should be especially noted.

The Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan will continue to take necessary measures to protect the rights and freedoms of its citizens in accordance with national legislation and international agreements to which our country is a party.
