The fight against climate change and diminishing its impacts should be aimed at reducing inequalities, Azerbaijani Ombudsman Sabina Aliyeva said in her article published by Respublika newspaper, Report informs.
According to Aliyeva, various approaches to protecting human rights can be proposed to combat climate change.
The ombudsman noted that support should be provided especially to developing countries and vulnerable communities, and wealthy countries should help these communities by reducing their carbon footprints.
She emphasized the importance of increasing communities' resilience against climate disasters to protect these rights:
"This requires the application of innovative approaches in areas such as water resource management, agriculture, and protection of residential areas."
Stating that closer cooperation should be established between legal and institutional organizations regarding climate change, Aliyeva added that this should be based on the joint activities of legal systems, international organizations, and civil society institutions:
"Legal obligations regarding climate change should be measures aimed at protecting human rights.
Educating international and local communities about climate change-related aspects of human rights is necessary, and paying special attention to more effective application of legal mechanisms based on principles of law and justice to reduce global impacts."
