Azerbaijan and Vatican sign memorandum on interreligious dialogue

The State Committee on Affairs with Religious Associations of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue of the Holy See have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote cooperation in the field of interfaith dialogue, Report informs.

The document was signed by Ramin Mammadov, Chairman of the State Committee, and Cardinal George Jacob Koovakad, Prefect of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue of the Vatican.

The memorandum outlines cooperation through the exchange of experience and information, as well as the organization of joint events aimed at advancing interfaith and intercultural dialogue, fostering mutual understanding and tolerance. It also includes provisions for collaboration in the field of religious education.

Chairman Mammadov provided an overview of the religious landscape in Azerbaijan, highlighting that the country’s policy—guided by President Ilham Aliyev—is based on international legal principles and norms. He emphasized Azerbaijan’s commitment to promoting mutual respect and understanding among different religious communities.

Cardinal Koovakad expressed satisfaction with the strong cooperation between Azerbaijan and the Vatican, recalling the visits of Popes John Paul II and Francis to Azerbaijan, which have played an important role in developing bilateral relations. He described the memorandum as a successful outcome of the strong partnership reflected in the 2011 Agreement on the Legal Status of the Catholic Church in Azerbaijan, which he said demonstrates respect for religious minorities in the country.

The cardinal also voiced confidence that the initiatives stemming from the memorandum will contribute significantly to promoting interreligious harmony and cultural diversity. He thanked President Ilham Aliyev for supporting the memorandum’s signing.

The signing ceremony was also attended by Ilgar Mukhtarov, Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to the Holy See.
