Southern Azerbaijanis holding protest rally in Berlin

The protest rally held in connection 17th anniversary of the bloody May events in Iran in 2006 - Khordad events, has started in Berlin, Report informs.

Protesters gathered in Unter Der Linden square holding various slogans and flags of Azerbaijan and South Azerbaijan.

They are chanting the “Freedom, Justice, National Government” slogan.

On May 12, 2006, a caricature depicting Turks as insects was published in the relevant issue of Iran newspaper, the official media outlet of the Iranian state. Protesting against this, Azerbaijanis started actions in the cities and towns where they live.

In order to prevent the growth of the protests, the Iranian law enforcement agencies had started taking measures to stop the peaceful protests using force.

During the protests, more than 30 of Azerbaijanis were killed by the Iranian regime's security forces, hundreds of people were injured, and many protestors were arrested

According to Southern Azerbaijani activists, more than 5,000 protesters were arrested and tortured, and nearly 200 people were killed or disappeared during the events.

Every year, Azerbaijanis and especially the Southern Azerbaijani activists all over the world, on this historical day - 1 Khordad, commemorate those who died during the events.
