A unique structure dating back to ancient times has been discovered in the Alishah fortress in the Astara district of Azerbaijan.
According to the southern bureau of Report, an expedition team from the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (NASA) has been conducting archaeological excavations in the Alishah fortress since June 2, 2025. During the excavations, a unique architectural specimen of great scientific significance was found on the site.
The head of the expedition, Doctor of Philosophy in History, Associate Professor Mikayil Mustafayev, told media that a stone pool complex shaped like a cloverleaf (quatrefoil) dating back to ancient times was discovered:
"This architectural form is considered the first documented water system in Azerbaijan. The pool complex has the shape of a lotus flower with a diameter of about 1.5 meters. The complex also includes stone water channels that provide a constant water flow, and additional structures covered with stone slabs," he said.
Based on the found ceramic materials and construction techniques, it is believed that this complex was built between the 1st century BCE and the 3rd century CE. Such a pool shape has previously only been documented in civilizations of the Near East, Iran, and the Mediterranean. Its discovery in Azerbaijan is considered an important scientific innovation for studying the ancient architectural and cultural history of the country.
Currently, the archaeological excavations are ongoing.
