Yalcin Rafiyev highly valued the role of football in fighting climate change and the launch of the Football Clubs Alliance for Climate initiative.
He noted that the creation of the Football Clubs Alliance is an exemplary step for the global football community and expressed gratitude to the European Club Association for supporting this initiative:
"Climate change is already here and real, creating danger for billions of people. To reach the global target of limiting warming to 1.5°C, we must involve all parties in this process and achieve inclusive results. Increasing ambition and implementing actions are the main principles of COP29. By supporting this initiative, the COP29 presidency demonstrates its ambitions that will result in the signing of the Baku Declaration. Today, you are gathered here not only as representatives of world-famous football clubs but also as guardians of our planet. Our common goal is to use football's unprecedented popularity at local, regional, and global levels to raise awareness about climate actions and take action.
This is a unique opportunity to demonstrate solidarity, mobilize support, and create long-term impact. Let's not forget the importance of our mission as we launch this initiative. Climate change is a challenge that knows no borders and affects everywhere in the world. This problem has multiple causes, and we have all contributed to it. Its footprint is evident in stadium construction, operations, and team and fan travel. Acknowledging our impact on climate change makes us part of the solution."
Rafiyev believes that the common obligation is to resolve this crisis decisively and without delay: "The declaration that clubs will sign today is not just a document. It is a promise made to future generations. By staying committed to sustainable practices, we are taking steps toward a healthier planet. Using football's powerful platform, we are engaging millions of fans in this important issue.
Let's remember the impact of football once again. Your influence extends far beyond the field, and your actions can inspire change on a global scale. By promoting climate action, you are protecting not only the future of the beloved sport but also the future of our planet. You will use your platform to inform and educate fans about the importance of climate action."
The COP29 chief negotiator added that making a difference is only possible together: "Together, we can create a legacy of sustainability and environmental protection. Thank you for your support, vision, and tireless efforts. Let's move forward purposefully and united from today, knowing that the steps we take today will shape a better tomorrow."
