On the first day of the 29th session of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, a report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) was presented, Report informs.

The document emphasizes that the large-scale goals of the Paris Agreement are under serious threat.

WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo delivered the opening speech at the report presentation in Baku.

"While monthly and annual warming indicators have temporarily exceeded 1.5°C, it's important to emphasize that this doesn't mean we have failed to achieve the Paris Agreement's goal of keeping the global average temperature increase well below 2°C compared to pre-industrial levels and continuing efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C," Saulo stated.

The secretary-general noted that any temperature changes matter.

"Every fraction of a degree of warming matters. Whether below or above the 1.5°C level, each new temperature increase intensifies extreme climate events and increases consequences and risks," she added.
