The upcoming UN climate conference COP29 should stimulate progress in two ways, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in his video address, Report informs.
He noted that COP29 should first and foremost present new national climate action plans for countries for the next year.
Governments have agreed to align these plans with 1.5°C. This means they must reduce all greenhouse gas emissions, and this must extend to all sectors of the economy, he said.
Progress needs to be stimulated across all sectors. The issue of climate financing will come to the forefront at COP29. Developing countries must increase their support to accelerate the transition to clean energy and combat global warming, Guterres stated.
The secretary-general added that COP29 must provide guarantees for the allocation of necessary funding, as well as for achieving the set goals.
