Mohamed Nasheed, Secretary-General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) and former President of the Maldives, expressed his appreciation for COP29’s organization. As a prominent climate advocate, Secretary-General Nasheed highlighted the impressive coordination at COP29 in Baku.
After a bilateral meeting with Ali Serim, Special Advisor on Geopolitics of Transition to ODI Global, Nasheed said, “This COP is exceptionally well-organized. I have attended many COPs, and in some, even obtaining a pass can take hours,” he remarked. “Here, it’s efficient, and I’m immensely impressed. The setup feels almost European, like something you might see in Vienna. I’m very glad to be here and witness the professionalism on display.”
Secretary-General Nasheed underscored the importance of climate advocates like Ali Serim for Small Island Developing States (SIDS). “People like Ali Serim are crucial supporters for SIDS. Our nations need advocates and allies, and we are deeply grateful for the work he has been doing for many years. I hope he continues his efforts, and perhaps his children will follow in his footsteps. His unique blend of personal and professional insights gives him an understanding of our challenges, especially around debt and climate vulnerability. With advocates like him, I believe we have a bright future. We are going to survive.”
He added, “Ali Serim’s commitment to SIDS highlights his understanding of their specific challenges. His dedication and insight make him a powerful advocate, raising global awareness and encouraging genuine, impactful support. Such contributions foster hope for a resilient future, where sustained efforts can lead vulnerable regions toward survival amid the UN climate crisis. Appreciation for these efforts, and the legacy they inspire, is crucial in advancing climate justice.”
The Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) is a global partnership of 68 countries disproportionately affected by climate change. The forum addresses the adverse impacts of climate change due to heightened socioeconomic and environmental vulnerabilities. These nations seek urgent and decisive action on climate both domestically and internationally. Formed to hold industrialized nations accountable, the CVF champions action to mitigate climate change and reduce vulnerability. The political leaders of the CVF use their platform to drive negotiations and have committed to pursuing low-carbon development and carbon neutrality.
