President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon has proposed to establish a regional coordination center for glaciology in Dushanbe, Report informs.
He was speaking at the COP29 summit in Baku.
"On the initiative of Tajikistan and France, the UN General Assembly declared 2025-2034 as the Decade of Action to support cryospheric sciences. Taking into account the importance of these issues, I propose that under the auspices of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and in cooperation with other development partners, a regional coordination center for glaciology should be established in Dushanbe," he noted.
Rahmon also said that on Tajikistan's initiative, the UN General Assembly declared 2025 as the Year of Glaciers' Preservation, and an International Trust Fund for Glacier Preservation was established.
"We must pay special attention to glacier melting, as it is connected with the consequences of climate change," Rahmon emphasized.
He reminded that a high-level international conference on glacier preservation will be held in Dushanbe in May 2025.
