No country can single-handedly overcome the challenges posed by climate change, President of the Marshall Islands Hilda Heine said during the Summit of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) held in Baku as part of COP29, Report informs.
President Heine emphasized that all conference participants must actively engage in efforts to address climate change. "Today, the world is making plans to maintain a temperature rise of 1.5 degrees Celsius. We must fulfill our obligations adequately. We support the conference chair. The Marshall Islands are committed to high goals. We understand that we must ensure the transition to clean energy."
The President also highlighted the urgent need for the Loss and Damage Fund to become operational. "At COP28, we declared that rising sea levels pose a threat to our existence as a society. Protecting the population living in urban areas and regulating rising sea levels require resources," she noted, stressing the importance of the fund's activation for adaptation plans.
Addressing the officials from participating countries, President Heine called for active engagement during the conference. "We must find solutions to climate problems now. Let us mobilize the necessary resources to address the issues faced by our region and other small island nations," she urged.
Expressing her commitment, President Heine said, "I want to tell President Ilham Aliyev that I have traveled a long distance to come here and contribute. I want us to act in solidarity."
