The Maldives will continue to call for decisive measures to combat climate change, President of Maldives Mohamed Muizzu said at the COP29 leaders summit, Report informs.
He noted that the Maldives recently began implementing a new energy policy, which includes important initiatives to improve food security, diversify the economy, create special economic zones, and establish new development banks.
He said that lack of finances hinders the achievement of set goals.
"That is why we must achieve results at COP29, where climate financing is the main theme," he added.
"The new collective quantitative goal must reflect the true scale of the climate crisis. The special circumstances of small island developing states must also be taken into account. The climate finance goal should also include adaptation, loss and damage mitigation. Developed countries must increase their commitments to close the financing gap and make the 1.5-degree target achievable," he said.
Muizzu emphasized that today significant amounts of financial resources are spent on waging wars, while developing countries need funds for adaptation.
He called for a review of priorities and reform of the international financial system.
"Our delegation is determined to achieve the financial goal right here in Azerbaijan," he said.
