Investing more in renewable energy is the way out of the climate crisis, the President of Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu, said during his speech at the Summit of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) held in Baku on November 13 as part of COP29, Report informs.
President Muizzu stressed that the development of island nations, cities, and villages is closely tied to this issue. "We are losing parts of our territories, and we must approach this issue comprehensively. As a united front, we must create resilience against climate change. We see investing more in renewable energy as the solution," he stated.
President Muizzu believes that by uniting efforts, it is possible to keep global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius across the planet. "We must join forces and take action," he urged.
The Maldivian leader also outlined his expectations from COP29, stating that it should deliver two key outcomes: "We must mainly obtain quantitative data and define new operational rules. This is specifically provided for in the Paris Agreement. There must be cooperation between governments. Governments can contribute to development plans. We must act now to save our world."
