Jeyhun Bayramov informs UNICEF regional director about preparations for COP29

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov met with the UNICEF’s Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia, based in Geneva, Switzerland and the Special Coordinator for the Refugee and Migrant Response in Europe, Regina de Dominicis, Report informs citing the MFA.

At the meeting, the issues on the current agenda of cooperation between Azerbaijan and UNICEF and the prospects of future cooperation, as well as the current regional situation, were discussed.

Bayramov said that from the first days of the restoration of the independence of his country, they have been closely cooperating with various specialized agencies of the UN, including UNICEF, especially in the field of creating better education and health care opportunities for children who became refugees and internally displaced persons as a result of the occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenia.

The other party was informed in detail about the large-scale restoration and reconstruction works carried out to ensure the dignified return of Azerbaijani citizens to their homes in the current post-conflict period, as well as the fight against the mine threat.

The minister hailed the educational activity carried out in the framework of cooperation with UNICEF, especially in the field of combating the mine threat, and emphasized the importance of drawing the attention of the international community to this threat.

Regina de Dominicis said that UNICEF is interested in continuing the current successful experience of cooperation with Azerbaijan, especially within the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will be hosted by Azerbaijan this year, and the World Urban Development Forum, which will be held in 2026.

It was brought to the attention that the restoration and construction activities aimed at the return of IDPs to their homes by Azerbaijan in the post-conflict period are admirable, and UNICEF is ready to support the process in this direction.

Bayramov, in turn, informed the other party about the initial plans in the process of preparation for COP29.

During the meeting, other issues of mutual interest were also discussed.
