At the High-Level Roundtable on the Green Digital Action Program, organized as part of COP29, the Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Doreen Bogdan-Martin, called for full support for the implementation of the Green Digital Action Agenda, set to be presented during COP29, Report informs.
Bogdan-Martin emphasized that member states recognize the need to pursue digital transformation and sustainability together: "That's why it was decided that sustainable digital transformation should be one of ITU's two strategic goals," she stated. “Technology companies are among the largest purchasers of renewable energy, with some already using 100% renewable electricity. However, as highlighted in ITU's Greening Digital Companies report, the environmental impact of the tech sector is increasing due to the growing global demand for network services and data storage.”
The ITU Secretary-General also acknowledged the vision and support of the COP29 Presidency and host country Azerbaijan in making the Digitalization Day possible. "This crucial moment for Green Digital Action should propel us forward with a shared belief that we can and must reduce the environmental impact of digital technologies while harnessing their undeniable potential in combating the climate crisis," she urged. "Let us continue to build our green digital power and, with it, a more sustainable digital future for generations to come until COP30."
