Gabon Vice President: Achieving goals will require deep reform of international financial system

The COP29 climate conference is organized in Baku as the world is struggling with unprecedented environmental challenges, Vice President of the Republic of Gabon, Joseph Owono Berr, said at the COP29 Leaders Summit in Baku, according to Report.

According to him, the rate of biodiversity loss is accelerating, with 70% of wildlife species already on the brink of extinction.

"This year, we reached record-breaking temperature increases. Another equally important problem is environmental pollution, particularly of the world's oceans, with plastic and other waste. All inhabitants of our planet are suffering, undoubtedly," he said.

Berr noted that solutions to the climate crisis are known and need to be implemented. This primarily means transitioning to renewable energy sources, he said.

"Despite a slight decline in global prosperity indicators in 2022, these indicators are growing again now. Therefore, funds for work are available. Our country's population is also suffering from the consequences of climate change. There is ongoing loss of wild flora and fauna species. It's time to act in the interests of the planet and nature," Berr emphasized.

The politician stressed that countries won't be able to fulfill their commitments without ensuring solidarity. According to him, achieving the set financial goals will require a deep reform of the international financial system.
