EU unlikely to submit updated climate goals plan to UN on time

The European Union, which has been vocal about the need for other organizations and countries to take decisive steps in combating climate change, is itself falling behind on its own proclaimed targets, Report informs via Politico.

Brussels is unlikely to present a draft of its updated plan for achieving climate goals during the COP29 summit in Baku (November 11-22), which it is supposed to submit to the United Nations in its final form by February 10, 2025. The EU had previously stated that promoting "ambitious plans" for the period up to 2035 was one of its priorities during the Baku summit.

However, the community is not meeting the deadlines, partly due to the growing reluctance of some EU countries to commit to achieving more stringent climate targets, the publication says. A senior official from the Polish government, which will lead the discussion on the new plan in January when it begins its EU presidency, said it is "essentially impossible" to meet the February deadline.

"I would be extremely surprised if we could meet these deadlines," Lars Aagaard, Denmark's Minister for Climate, Energy, and Utilities, told Politico earlier.
