Erik Oyare: Rivers, lakes and wetlands overlooked in combat climate crisis

Despite their crucial role in combating the climate crisis, rivers, lakes, and wetlands have often been overlooked, according to Eric Oyare, the Leader of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) - Blue Heart of Africa Initiative, Report informs.

Speaking during the "Water Action: Water Solutions for Climate Action" event held as part of COP29, Oyare emphasized that the rivers, lakes, and wetlands play a vital role in fighting climate change, enhancing water and food security, and ensuring sustainable development

"However, these ecosystems have always been neglected and undervalued, making them among the most threatened ecosystems in the world," he added. Global reports indicate that one-third of the world's wetlands have already been destroyed.

In this context, Oyare highlighted the significance of the Freshwater Call to Action Initiative, which has already been joined by 47 countries, including the European Union. This initiative aims to provide governments with guidance and tools to prioritize restoration efforts between 2025 and 2030.

"The Freshwater Call to Action Initiative will increase overall investment in the restoration and protection of these ecosystems," Oyare stated. Furthermore, the initiative will significantly enhance the profitability of investments in this area, including promoting the importance of nature-based solutions.
