Dietram Oppel: Digital technologies can significantly expand climate change fighting capabilities

Digital technologies, particularly AI, are at the intersection of climate change mitigation and adaptation, Dietram Oppel, Vice Chair of the UN Climate Change Technology Executive Committee (TEC), said during a press conference.

Report quotes him as saying digital technologies offer innovative solutions that can significantly expand capabilities for addressing climate issues.

TEC fully supports the COP29 declaration on the green digital agenda and strives to promote effective strategies, he said.

He noted that the committee recognizes AI's transformational potential in accelerating climate problem solutions.

The UN representative emphasized that the Tech AI Innovation Grand Challenge received numerous applications demonstrating AI's potential in areas such as early warning systems, resource management, and emissions reduction.

He said it's encouraging to see how AI is being used for effective climate action worldwide.

Oppel added that building appropriate capacity in developing countries is crucial for implementing climate change solutions.
