COP29: Activists call for fossil fuel phase-out and climate justice

Representatives of public organizations and climate activists expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of ambitious solutions to combat global warming and demanded that countries develop a new plan to phase out fossil fuels, Earth Island Institute representatives said during a press conference at COP29.

According to Report, participants emphasized that without significant funding and decisive action, the world faces an environmental catastrophe.

Harjeet Singh, Global Engagement Director of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, stated that negotiations have reached a deadlock, with developed countries evading their commitments. "We see disagreements, lack of concrete solutions, and clear profit orientation. Financing is the foundation of any change, but developed countries don't want to discuss amounts. This is betrayal, unfair negotiations that threaten global climate ambitions," he noted.

Singh emphasized that developing countries cannot abandon fossil fuels and build a "green" economy without financial support.

Tato Gubaytsi, a climate justice activist from Botswana, described how the climate crisis is already destroying millions of lives. "For many Global North countries, the climate crisis might seem like a distant threat, but for us, it's reality. Fields are drying up, mothers and children walk kilometers searching for water. We need funding in the form of grants, not loans, to protect our communities," she stated.

Joseph Sikulu, representing Pacific Climate Warriors, noted the imbalance in negotiations and reminded about the need for significant financial investments.

Ayshka Najib, a Fridays for Future activist, presented an open letter signed by over 100 global opinion leaders, scientists, and activists, calling for a new global plan to stop fossil fuel expansion and ensure transition to renewable energy.

"We launched a letter to remind leaders: we are on the brink. Climate injustice must be eliminated. We demand a new global plan that will stop the expansion of coal, oil and gas extraction and ensure the transition to renewable energy," Najib emphasized.
