European Council President Charles Michel has expressed hope that COP29 will become a conference of trust, resilience, and transition from words to actions, Report informs.
Michel was speaking at the COP29 leaders' summit. Michel emphasized that the devastating effects of climate change are being observed more frequently worldwide.
"Humanity is facing such a climate crisis for the first time. Humanity itself bears responsibility for this crisis. Some communities certainly bear more responsibility than others," he said.
According to him, the principle of cooperation should be fundamental in implementing the Paris Agreement.
"We must show courage and solidarity. You can count on the European Union, which annually allocates 31 billion US dollars as part of its financial commitments. This is more than a fair share, and we call on all our colleagues, including G7 countries and rapidly developing economies, to follow our example," the European Council president noted.
He also emphasized that the EU supports a multi-level approach in fighting climate change. Michel called for mobilizing international trade and development banks to achieve the set goals.
"A few weeks ago in New York, contrary to pessimistic forecasts, we concluded a 'Pact for the Future.' And I hope that this conference of parties will become a conference of trust, resilience, and transition from words to actions," he added.
