If countries do not change their climate protection policies, global warming will reach 3 degrees Celsius by the end of the century, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said at the COP29 leaders' summit, Report informs.
"We must set ambitious goals and implement them as effectively and flexibly as possible. Our citizens expect results from us and cooperation for rapid and decisive decarbonization," he said.
De Croo believes that climate negotiations are far from perfect, but comparing current climate policy with that of a decade ago, significant progress can be noticed.
The vast majority of countries have embarked on the path to achieving zero emissions. However, many problems remain. We need to do more in terms of energy efficiency," said the prime minister.
He noted that solving climate problems is difficult but possible if we use all opportunities, increase investments, and make financing accessible to everyone.
The politician also emphasized the importance of ensuring a fair energy transition, where priority attention will be given to the problems of developing countries and those most vulnerable to the climate crisis.
"We need to double our adaptation efforts to reduce the negative impact of climate change on the planet and people. Adaptation is absolutely necessary to convince our citizens that we can change their lives for the better," he added.
