Georgian court releases former deputy on bail

The Tbilisi City Court has made a decision on the member of the opposition United National Movement party, Niki Melia, whose parliamentary immunity was suspended yesterday.

Local bureau of Report informs that, according to the decision, he was released on bail of 30,000 GEL.

Judge Temur Gogokhia says the ex-deputy is banned from leaving the place of residence without permission of the investigating authority.

The defense side demanded the release of Melia in exchange for a pledge of 10,000 GEL.

Prosecutor General’s Office of Georgia, in turn, demanded court to arrest Melia.

Notably, the decision was followed by the Prosecutors Office’s request of June 25, charging MP Melia with inciting and heading mass violence during June 20-21 events. The Prosecutor's Office has submitted a motion to the court, requesting a preventive measure against Nika Melia.

In the event of proof of guilt, he may face imprisonment from 6 to 9 years.
