US-Iran talks delayed due to Khamenei's whereabouts being concealed

Negotiations between the US and Iran have become a cumbersome process, with messages taking days to exchange as Tehran attempts to conceal the whereabouts of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, Report informs referring to Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the situation.

The publication's sources note that proposals from US negotiators are conveyed to senior Iranian officials through a roundabout diplomatic route, often involving couriers to conceal the whereabouts of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. Iranian authorities fear he could become an assassination target, and therefore, his whereabouts are kept strictly confidential.

Unstable communications in Iran during the war also complicated the situation; WhatsApp messages were reportedly sometimes taking 48 hours to arrive.

According to sources, the negotiations also depend on Pakistani officials conveying US proposals and responses by telephone and through personal visits to Tehran before sending couriers.

According to the agency's sources, direct communication remains between US Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump stated that Washington and Tehran had agreed to a deal, but Iran denied these statements.
