UN calls for release of Myanmar detainees and end to violence

The UN Security Council called on the current military authorities in Myanmar to abandon violence against peaceful protesters, release all those detained without sufficient grounds, and move to a constructive dialogue on the transfer of power to a civilian government in the interests of the people of the country.

Report informs, citing TASS, a statement following the Security Council's meeting on the situation in Myanmar reads.

"The Security Council strongly condemns violence against peaceful protesters, including against women, youth, and children, and calls for the release of all those illegally detained. The Council calls on the military to exercise maximum restraint and stresses that it is closely monitoring the situation, " the statement said.

Moreover, the Security Council members again called for the transfer of power to a civilian government.

The Security Council also noted the activity of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Christine Schraner. The organization supported her efforts to visit Myanmar as soon as possible in search of dialogue with all parties.
