Hungarian parliament backs amendment to remove president

Hungary's parliament has approved a constitutional amendment that would remove President Tamas Sulyok from office, Report informs, citing Reuters.

The amendment, backed by Prime Minister Peter Magyar's ruling Tisza Party, was adopted by 139 votes in favor and six against in the 199-seat parliament.

The measure would end Sulyok's term immediately, citing a serious loss of public confidence. Parliament would then elect a new president until a new constitution enters into force or for a maximum of five years.

Magyar said work on a new constitution would begin in the autumn. Sulyok, a former Constitutional Court judge elected president by parliament in 2024, has refused to resign and says he has no political agenda.

Fidesz lawmakers boycotted the vote.
