Russian political scientist: Adequacy of Armenian armed forces in doubt

“The adequacy of the Armenian armed forces has long been questioned by many experts observing the processes taking place after the end of the Karabakh war, as a result of which Baku got back its occupied territories," Russian expert on interethnic conflicts Yevgeny Mikhailov told Report, commenting on the recent provocation committed by the Armenian armed forces.

According to the political scientist, such provocations were committed deliberately: “Yerevan is shaken by the internal political confrontation before the elections, and such provocations are beneficial to those forces that don’t want Pashinyan to fully comply with the agreements signed in November 2020.”

Commenting on Azerbaijan’s position in this situation, the expert noted that Baku is behaving quite restrainedly, ‘not giving loud reasons for accusations.’

“The tension will remain at least until the elections in Yerevan,” Mikhailov believes, and then, Russia, as a guarantor of stability in the region, can contribute to the normalization of the situation, he noted.

According to the Ministry of Defense and the State Border Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan, another provocation of the Armenian armed forces in the direction of the village of Armudlu in the Kalbajar region of Azerbaijan was thwarted on June 1, 2021.

On June 1, at around 20:00, the Armenian armed forces with about 40 servicemen intervened the territory of Azerbaijan in 400 meters in the direction of Armudlu village of the Kalbajar region of the Republic of Azerbaijan and took a position in geographical coordinates: N 40°04′30″; E 45°54′42″.

As a result of urgent actions taken by the Armed Forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Armenian armed forces were withdrawn from the territory of the country.
