Russian expert: Russia does not attach any importance to Karabakh's status

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made it clear that Russia won't discuss Karabakh's status, political scientist and military expert Alexander Perenjiyev told Report's Russian bureau, commenting on the statement of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

"To date, there are certain agreements, there is the recognition of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, while the status of Nagorno Karabakh is not envisaged in any protocol or document. Respective agreements contain the issues of de-blocking economic ties, transport corridors, but not the status," the expert said.

"Russia will not touch upon this issue as of yet, or probably it will never do it. If Azerbaijan and Armenia sign a peace treaty and an agreement on establishing borders, the topic of the status will certainly be removed from the agenda," the Russian expert believes.

Perenjiyev stressed the need to create economic mechanisms to strengthen relations between the Armenian and Azerbaijani people. "The rapprochement of the two nations should take place within the framework of economic activity. It is also necessary to pay special attention to the cultural cooperation of the countries."
