More efforts are needed to be taken to demine the liberated lands of Azerbaijan and to attract the attention of more people to this problem, Acting UNDP Resident Representative in Azerbaijan Alessandra Roccasalvo said at the 3rd International Humanitarian Demining Conference on “Mitigating Environmental Impact of Landmines: Resource Mobilization for a Safe and Green Future,” Report informs.
“The fight against the mine threat is very important today not only for Azerbaijan, but also for other countries suffering from the consequences of mine contamination,” she said.
According to Roccasalvo, one of the key points in the mine clearance process in Azerbaijan is that UNDP and ANAMA are joining forces to carry out technical work.
“As has already been noted, it will take 25-30 years for us to complete this work [on demining]. If we cannot direct efforts in the right direction, then we are heading towards collective failure. Therefore, it is important to continue to hold such conferences,” she said.
