A total of 3,381 Azerbaijanis have been injured as a result of the explosion of mines and unexploded ordnance since 1991, reads the report on landmine incidents presented at the event held within the framework of the Azerbaijan Campaign Against Mines and the Mine-Free South Caucasus regional campaign in the Horadiz settlement of the Fuzuli district, Report informs.
358 of them are children and 38 are women.
It was emphasized at the event that even though the war is over, the danger of landmines still remains.
Between November 2020 and May 16, 2023, 141 civilians were hit by landmines, 44 of them were killed, and 97 people were injured.
As reported, 161 military servicemen were victims of mines and unexploded ordnance of which 13 people were killed and 148 people were injured.
During the discussions, the reasons for the civilian population falling into landmines were also revealed: "40% of the people who fell into landmines are those who illegally visited the liberated territories with the desire to see their ancestral homes. 20% of the incidents occurred while carrying out infrastructure work in mine-contaminated areas, 19% during service duties and demining operations, and 21% while engaging in agricultural activities."
