Markov: Surrender was hard, but best choice for Armenia

Surrender was hard, but the best choice for Armenia, which signed a trilateral declaration dated November 10, 2020, Russian political scientist, director of the Center for Political Research Sergei Markov told Report's Russian bureau.

“The trilateral statement of the leaders of Azerbaijan, Russia and Armenia is very difficult for Yerevan. It means defeat for Armenia as a result of the 44-day war. Surrender is hard, but the best choice. It is better than the disappearance of a thousand people. That’s because Azerbaijan would still liberate these territories,” Markov said.

He noted that initially “the Armenians had more ambitions than their armed forces, which led to the defeat,” and the Russian mediation in signing the statement only helped save the lives of several thousand soldiers.

According to the expert, the Armenian population understands much better that the difficult conditions of the trilateral statement were necessary and inevitable to save the lives of Armenian servicemen: “This situation showed that the Armenian people are frustrated with a defeat that they did not expect.”

Markov stressed that the results of the 44-day war were natural and predictable.
