The world community should actively promote demining in Azerbaijan, director of the Links Europe fund Dennis Sammut said at the 2nd International Conference on “Mine Action – the Path to Reaching the Sustainable Development Goals” in Azerbaijan’s Aghdam, Report informs.
Sammut noted that the destruction he saw in Aghdam the day before causes grief.
The international community should make more efforts to solve the problem of landmines, he said.
He noted that it is imperative to take into account the rights of hundreds of thousands of people who were forced to leave these territories after the start of the Armenian occupation and who now want to return to these lands.
Mine clearance is a big problem for Azerbaijan and the country already has extensive experience in this area, he added. Only joint efforts can turn the South Caucasus into a landmine-free region, he said.
