Korotchenko: Azerbaijan’s response to provocation on border was adequate and justified

Shooting at Azerbaijani positions was carried out with precision, with the intention of causing maximum damage. At the same time, the question arises: where are the observers of the European observation mission, why didn’t they record criminal actions on the Armenian side, said Director-General of the Caspian Institute for Strategic Studies, Igor Korotchenko, commenting on the Armenian provocations on the borders with Azerbaijan, Report's Russian bureau said.

The expert noted that only a tough response can put in place those who, on the Armenian side, are engaged in such provocations.

“What happened is further evidence that the EU mission in Armenia primarily acts in the interests of Yerevan, it sees nothing and hears nothing during such attacks. Under these conditions, the response from Azerbaijan is legitimate and fully fits into the logic of international law. It is obvious that only a tough response can put in place those who are engaged in such provocations on the Armenian side and normalize the operational situation along the conditional Armenian-Azerbaijani border line,” he added.

He noted that the calculation of the Armenian side was “to drag Azerbaijani security forces into a large-scale confrontation, and then allow EU observers to blame Azerbaijan for everything that happened.” But the Azerbaijani side reacted correctly to the situation - precise fire suppression of the enemy’s position without escalating the incident, he noted.
