Int’l expert struck by scale of mine contamination in Azerbaijan

“I was struck by the scale of mine contamination, having first entered the liberated Azerbaijani territories,” Terry Sandell, director of Cultural Futures LLC., international expert on culture and creative industries, told Report.

“The danger of mines and the related problems of their clearance are understood, of course, by the people who are here,” he said.

Sandell believes that there are two main problems associated with the ‘renaissance’ of Shusha and with the fact that this revival is sustainable: “Firstly, these are mines. We must clear the territory of mines in order to be physically safe there. But we must also ‘clear’ our minds, our thoughts for mutual understanding and reconciliation between countries, in order to be safe for the long term, and so that war will never happen again.”
