ICMP: New MoU to strengthen co-op with Azerbaijan

International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) is looking forward to cooperating with Azerbaijan and assisting the country in the missing persons process, ICMP told Report.

As the organization noted during the visit to Azerbaijan, ICMP Director General signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the State Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the ICMP.

“The MoU will pave the way for future support from ICMP to account for the missing from the conflict [between Armenia and Azerbaijan],” noted ICMP.

ICMP is a treaty based intergovernmental organization with the mandate is to secure the cooperation of governments and other authorities in locating persons missing as a result of conflicts, human rights abuses, natural and man-made disasters and other involuntary reasons and to assists them in doing so.

“ICMP assists governments to fulfil their legal obligations to account for missing persons. It helps them to develop institutional and legislative capacities, promotes the rule of law, fosters engagement of families of the missing and provides technical expertise to locate the missing helping them to build a sustainable, impartial, credible and transparent process that secure the rights of surviving families of the missing,” concluded the organization.
